When Reid finally walked up the driveway of the Simms' residence, he was tired, his lips were parched, and his face was burning from the spring sun that he had not counted on being so hot already.

Not that he'd had that much of time to consider such shit.

And still, the reason for the slump of his shoulders as he knocked on the door had nothing to do with being tired. Not physically, at least.

Right. Don't think of it. His arms wrapped more around him, as though he could protect himself from the misery, while the words his mom had said, her voice so... calm, so contained, so normal that it made him want to puke, ran through his head again before he managed to banish them at least somewhat once again.

He breathed out in relief when it was Tyler who answered the knock. He'd had as much dealing with adults as he wanted to take for today. Wishful thinking, you know.

Shaddup.

"Reid!"

"Hey."

His friend took in the sight of him, frowned a little, and looked around. "How'd you get here?"

"Walked."

"From town?"

"From home."

"Are you nuts?" Reid didn't answer, just stared at him. There was more than a year till he turned sixteen; he obviously couldn't have driven. After another moment, Tyler shook himself from the surprise and tugged him in, giving him a brief hug on the go as he moved past him; Reid's arms remained trapped between them, even if he leaned a little into that. "You're shaking. You should've called a cab or something. Or called..."

"I couldn't."

Tyler's steps beside him slowed, for a moment, then he caught up. "Your mom?"

Reid didn't answer, didn't even look at him. He still saw the headshake.

"Right. Go on, I'll be right up." Catching the slightly wide-eyed look, he lifted a hand. "I'm just gonna grab a couple of water bottles for you before you pass out or something, will be right up."

A nod, and he did go on the known hallway till he stepped into the familiar room, the mess and the smell not hitting but embracing him in. It was Tyler's place, through and through, and it was okay, when he was with Tyler. When he was with his friends.

He, on the other hand, probably stank right now, too.

He sat on the floor by the side of the bed, heels pressed against his butt, and closed his eyes. After a moment, his head rolled back against the rumpled covers. The corner of a magazine, there were a few scattered around the bed, he'd seen, and one open.

The click of the door, and steps, and then Tyler's voice as the other boy lowered himself before him. "Here. Drink this." Reid look at him, then opened his hand to take in the cool bottle, wrapping his fingers around it for a moment before untangling enough to unscrew the cap and lift it to his lips. "Slow! Start slow."

The blond's lips twitched. He knew that part; for all they were on the swimming team, they'd both, well all four, been through the dehydration lecture. Not to mention that his mom was a doctor.

Which thought made his eyes close and shoulders slouch a little more again, even if he did, obediently, start nuzzling at the water. Tyler kept quiet until he finished the whole bottle, hand propped on the floor so that his arm was pressing against Reid's shin. Then replaced the empty bottle with a fresh one. "What happened?"

The answer was a small headshake, eyes not looking up enough to meet his. "Doesn't matter."

"Reid..." Eyelids squeezed shut, something... something that he saw must have made his friend change what he was going to say to, "your face's sunburnt."

The blond's eyelashes fluttered open and now he did look at him. "Yeah?"

"Yeah."

"You okay?"

"Yeah. 'm fine." A beat, and he looked away. Around the room. "I should go. Leave you to whatever you were doing."

"What?"

"I'm hanging out here all the time anyway, you're probably sick and--" which was where Tyler reached and thwapped him on the back of the head. Not that it was that far of a reach... anyway. The blond blinked at him.

"Don't ever," the younger boy glared, and that was impressive, considering that it wasn't his kind of thing, "ever think, let alone say, anything like that, alright? You're my friend. You're always welcome where I am. Hear me?"

And now Reid could barely swallow, the lump in his throat had tightened so much. He just nodded.

A moment later, Tyler had shifted to his knees and tugged him for another hug, shoulders, knees, and everything. Not that either of them expected him to start crying.

Tyler's fingers were running through his hair, gently, since the walk had tangled it a bit, somewhat later.

"Wanna shower?"

"Don't have clothes to change into."

That got him the snort it deserved. "I'll take that as a yes."

But neither of them moved for a bit more. Well, no, Reid burrowed his face more against his friend's shoulder.

When his heartbeat was no longer thundering in his ears, he finally moved to go take that shower. Or, um, share it with his friend.

Things were better already.
