Flailing!Reid: 666
The mother of one of the girls from their class had volunteered to direct the school play; Reid saw a chance and snatched at it. Extra credit at school without teachers involved? Check. Staying away from home longer? Check. Finding out what the whole play thing was about? Check. A chance to get some laughs?
Check, check, check.
And since the week when the 'casting' was, Caleb and Pogue were still home with the mumps (and Reid was the one who'd caught that first and Tyler right with him, so the two of them were just back to school - and his energy levels were rocketing), the blond dragged his best-best friend to the 'auditions'.
Well and good; the volunteer director had no idea why about half the children cheered and the other half shifted uncomfortably when his name was read with the rest of them who'd be in. She thought that boys who looked like the two of them and seemed enthusiastic to be in the play (as opposed to being pressed into participation by eager parents) were a blessing.
By the second rehearsal, she thought she had been absolutely right. They were very responsive, as per their age group - and even beyond - and they'd even actually learned all their lines. It was a wonderful example for the rest. She was thinking - if she was doing it again next year, she might have them again, if they still wanted to do this kind of thing.
By the sixth rehearsal, she knew a hell of a lot better. Between pranks, stirring everybody on rehearsals, and talking god-knew what when she wasn't there (her own daughter had come home with a few words and a couple of stories that she said she knew from Reid that the mother would definitely rather she hadn't learned for... about a decade more), the blond boy was a handful - if just hinting that he might not be in the play anymore hadn't gotten everybody upset, she would have given his part to somebody else.
By the day of the performance... well. On the day of the performance, he was like a miniature, loud torpedo crossed over with a crazy ball.
Tyler was trying to keep up with him and keep him calm, at least a little, but the effect was actually only adding to the noise and fuss. That said, Reid was flailing only a little about forgetting lines or what he was supposed to do. A little more flailing ... no. A lot more flailing about everybody else forgetting their lines, what came after what, props, motions. After all, his friends would be there watching, right? He was also running all around the backstage, making sure everything was in place, everybody was there and dressed and made up, and no, tonight he wasn't doing any tricks (to everyone's relief), he was just ... gone nutty.
All up until the point when the director was told by one of the teachers that Reid's mother was there, and maybe they shouldn't actually tell him, since some kids actually got even more excited by their parents being there, and neither of them expected him to be within hearing...
... but the nose level dropped as though a switch had been flipped.
Tyler, who had been about three steps behind his friend's dead run almost bumped into his back, he skidded so suddenly. And then didn't move for a few moments. The younger boy walked around him and almost flinched. The blond's face was still, tense; his eyes kind of narrowed and his smile... well. Most kids their age did not do those sharp smiles, not really.
"Reid... you okay?"
That got him a blue-eyed look, and a twitch of his mouth.
A moment later, he just grabbed his sleeved and dived in the direction of the stage. "Let's go."
It was just a heartbeat before the director called, "Curtain!"
